Tips on bringing your new pet home:
  1. Before picking up your new pet, do some shopping. Dogs will need food, bowls, a collar and a leash, an ID tag, some type of bed, treats and toys. Cats will also need most of the above and a litter box and carrier. This way you will have everything ready for them when you introduce them to your new home.
  2. Preparation is important for a smooth transition as is patience and taking things slowly. Give your new pet time and space to get to know you. He will undoubtedly feel some confusion and anxiety for the first few days but you will both feel settled in with each other in a short time. If your adopted pet was found as a stray you might not have much information about his past, whether he was trained or housebroken. He will look to you for security and will need to learn your routines.
  3. When you first introduce a new dog to your home you may want to keep him on his leash. Show him his food, water, bed and outside area. Introduce him to other pets you may have and be sure to watch them carefully. If you already have an older pet, be sure to protect his toys, food, bed, etc. from the new pet. When you leave your new pet alone, you may want to put him in a confined area at first with a few toys.
  4. Take your new pet outside to the same spot and praise him for doing his business where you want him to. There may be accidents at first, even if your new pet is housebroken but gently reprimand him if you catch him in the act and take him outside immediately. If you find an accident don't punish him, as he won't understand. Spots cleaned up with vinegar and water will remove all scents and reminders about doing it in the house again. Never hit your pet and remember positive discipline will have the most success. Be consistent with rules of the house from the beginning. That way he has the security of knowing his boundaries and learns to become a well-behaved companion.
